I wanted him to be the first person in my life to throw me into the deep end, to drag me from the light into the darkness and the shadows to show me what lurked there, to teach me how to play with the monsters instead of fear them.
“I got a cause, babe. Gettin’ you on the back of my bike and gettin’ you to stay there.”
He watched me as if he knew me, knew the horrible bits of me but accepted them. Even more, he looked at me like he could see the dark heart of me and liked it.
“There they are. Missed those whiskey eyes of yours,” he said, quietly.
You hear me on that, because I may be a man without a normal moral compass, but I’m a man who makes a woman a promise, and I’ll die before I break it.”
“Hey, old man,” King shouted from the side of the house. “Just ’cause I’m mad at her doesn’t mean you can hit on my woman. Find someone uglier who’s willin’ to put up with your horrible mug!” “For Pete’s sake, I am not your woman,” I yelled back, hands immediately fisting on my hips.
King wanted me to live and he just wanted the opportunity to help me do it.
“You look like you want to fucking worship me.” “I do,” I said. “I shouldn’t want to, but I’ve never wanted anything more.”
Happiness is streaking bare-assed naked down the wet sand into the waves, it’s drinkin’ too much and laughin’ too loud with your friends, it’s lovin’ so hard you want to devour the flesh, soul, and mind of another person.
“God, that’s so hot.” “No God in this bedroom, Cress. Call me what I am: your King,”
King had arrived in my life like an angel fallen from heaven and ascended from hell, like my own real-life Satan who whispered rebellion in my ear so winningly I had no choice but to answer his call.
“And I got you. You’re mine, little Queen. And I’m gonna take everythin’ from you.”
Because if I was going to burn, I was going to make sure we did it together.
