Rogers did the opposite—when she saw the bear, she sat quietly in her wheelchair. “I tried to stay calm,” she would say afterward. She remained calm as the bear approached her, sat down next to her, silent, and then began rocking its head from side to side. She was calm right up until the moment it attacked. “All of a sudden,” she said, “he just let me have it.”
