“Weapons are forbidden in the camp, little girl.” He pointed the tip of the knife at her nose. “Call me that again, and I’ll turn you into one.”
“What you believe about me has no bearing at all on the truth. So believe as you like.”
“Sultana,” Makram said, but she cut him off with a raised hand.
As she started for the door, Makram spoke. “How did you get away from Bashir?” Aysel glanced at him over her shoulder and gave him a half smile. “I ran like the wind.”
Bashir knew he did, he always chose women who treated him more like a pet than an equal.
Do not make the mistake of thinking her asking for help means she is incapable.”
“You always think you are failing.” She smiled and shook her head. “Especially when you are excelling.”
“You’re very brave, handing me a knife and then sitting right next to me.”
I will turn your corpse into a tomb for your desiccated organs.”
“I find your breathing vexing. Say what you have to say.”
“Creativity is the exercise of a finely tuned mind.”
“Feel free to see yourself out.”
“Shall we see if we fit together?”
“No, please stay and force me to watch you mouth each other like carp at mossy pond stone,”
“Ignorance is a child’s excuse.
“Get your hands off, if you do not want me to give them back to you one finger at a time.”
The world does not change because we sit back and wish it to. It changes because we do the things we must, make decisions we do not wish to make, to move it forward.
“Can we speak to each other? Instead of…this?”
“And I suggest you take your childish temper tantrum and go jump off a bridge.”
“No. I don’t find myself aroused by a man who loses his temper with me and will not even tell me why.”
“He’s a warrior, Aysel, not a pampered noble son that can barely stand the sight of his own shadow. Why would he not want you? Want someone who is kindred? Who is fully capable of facing all of the worst of what he might experience, not as someone who stands by and pats his back to comfort him, but who can stand beside him through it? And why would you want anything other than someone who can do the same for you?”
