Within weeks, Thein Sein received a positive response from the country’s oldest insurgent group, the Karen National Union. The Karen lived across the south of Burma. They included both Buddhist and Christians, but in the eastern hills most villages, as well as the leadership of the KNU itself, were primarily Baptist.
