In the mystery plays of medieval England—which reenacted stories from the Bible—the biblical characters talked, acted, and dressed like ordinary Englishmen. In many Renaissance paintings, biblical figures are dressed like people of the painter’s time and are placed in obviously European, rather than Palestinian, landscapes.
