Since he’d been a child and he’d seen a man, clearly a veteran soldier, begging in the street, one leg gone, just a stub showing, he’d been terrified that he’d end up that way.

This was a very personal scene for me to write. I had an uncle and father who served. My uncle was amazing and I was close to him. He was a good man. He lost his ability to walk and had to be in a wheelchair. He’d tried other equipment to help him walk, but it didn’t work or was too painful. So I thought of him while I was writing this.

Wow that is very interesting, I know quite a few good men (my father, 3 brother-in-laws and a woman who served. Now that I know this, I’ll definitely remember this whenever I reread this book!
