‘I’m keeping the hundred by the way,’ Nate said as Steven led the way to the door. Steven laughed. ‘It’s counterfeit. You’re welcome to it.’

Both interviewers smiled. Why wouldn’t they? They knew what was coming.

In this shitty world, it did seem as though people were out more for themselves than for anyone else. Why worry about hurting someone’s feelings so long as your own feelings were saved?

‘Is there really nothing I can do to stop this?’ He shook his head. I expected nothing less. He doesn’t say the words which are obvious: I had every opportunity to leave.
