But when a reporter for a Chicago-based socialist newspaper wandered forty miles up I-94 to the industrial suburbs of Macomb County, the unemployed Chrysler employees he met in a workingman’s bar were all voting for Reagan; the Democrats, they said, were just interested in handing out welfare to lazy Blacks instead of helping people like them.
