It's not that I'm not liking this, is that, knowing that this was published in 2018 the prose imitating the old writing style of books writen a century ago is really jarring to me. It's the same issue I had with Hook: dead to rights. You know how much I dislikeinsincerity. There's a diference between characters talking like people did back then and another for the author to do it himself in his prose. I don't like it.

LEIGH-ON-SEA TO LONDON, NOVEMBER 1906 Running away was not like it was in the stories. People did not try and stop you. They did not give chase. The thing people didn’t understand was that you had to decide what you were running away from. Most of the time it wasn’t mothers or fathers or monsters or villains; most of the time you were running away from that little voice inside your head, the one telling you to stay where you are, that everything will turn out all right.

I just realized this author can't describe human emotions. He can describe objects and sometimes places in detail, but he can't make people act or talk like people.

‘What do you think, little thing?’ he said, eyeing the Imperial Kapitan. ‘I’m going to have to talk to you. If I don’t talk to somebody, I’m bound to go mad, and you’re the only one there is …’

yeah, I don't understand why the author is hellbend on making Emil miserable. I thought he was going to be the main guy at first, a sympathetic hero we would root for, finally overcoming his brother. But no, the author liked Kaspar a bit too much.

I can't believe Cathy was on Kaspar's side on this way. She had no right to allow Emil's suffering like this. Wasnt one brother hurting bad enought? Cathy hates Emil. Everyone hates Emil because the author does, and does everything he can to see him dispair. I want Emil to kill Kaspar, if he did I would applaud.
