“I’ve got no plans to defile Jensen’s protégé. You can rest easy.”
“We all lose sight sometimes. Of what’s truly important. Of all the people around us who are suffering. That doesn’t mean we can’t recalibrate. Reset our compass so we’re facing the right direction again.”
Our gazes locked, held. Some foreign energy crackling between us. “Stay that way.” “I will.” She would. I’d make sure of it.
If I were honest with myself, I didn’t like the person I used to be all that much. Going along with just about every dictate set out by my parents, even the ones disguised as a suggestion. I couldn’t hold back from her any longer. It was as if her soul called to mine in a song only the two of us could recognize. A broken siren’s song. And it was the most beautiful thing I’d ever heard.
I had to save myself first. Even if it meant that my heart would never be whole again.
Tuck threw up his hands. “Praise, Jesus, he has a brain in there, after all.”
