Even though I had no intention of taking my crush on Dmitry to any level other than admiring him from afar, the damned crush remained. Instant and ever-present, my attraction hadn’t faded one iota since I began working at P.O.L.A.R. If anything, it’d grown increasingly stronger. For some reason, I couldn’t stop making an idiot out of myself in front of him, either. It was degrading. And the real reason I would have preferred living in my car.
I winced as she tripped over a chair and bumped into the wall. She giggled and her face flushed pink before she turned and hurried away. I gritted my teeth and shook my head. Maybe I needed to follow her—for protection. She was a bit of a hazard to herself.
She made me nervous as hell. I never knew what she was going to do next and I felt like I was watching her with baited breath, waiting to derail her next near-catastrophe.
Whenever our eyes met, there was something strained about his expression, like I gave him heartburn.
“Um, excuse me? You two want to explain why the fuck you just remodeled the place?” Serge gestured towards the chalky mess that had been a wall seconds earlier. Alexei was on top of the pile of drywall pieces, a stupid grin on his face. “And why are you grinning? What
did you do? You’re fucking with him, aren’t you? Shit, what am I saying? Of course you’re fucking with him.”
what? What would you have done then, huh?” I met his angry stare and hiccupped. “P.O.L.A.R. would’ve gotten a better, more competent replacement.” “Not fucking funny. I’m not fucking laughing right now, Kerrigan. See my face. Serious as shit.” He pointed his finger at his chin. “You’re a fucking menace to yourself.”
“Why are you looking at me like that?” I straightened my face and shrugged. “Like what?” “Like you want to laugh at me. Is it funny that I thought you might have actually wanted to be with me? It probably is, isn’t it? You’re this hot looking hero guy and I’m this mousy little four-eyed virgin. Literally, the last thing on your mind is someone like me. I guess the other day was just scratching an itch with whomever was available? I just happened to be in the right place at
the right time? Lucky me. It’s terrible to laugh at someone because they have a crush on you.” She gasped a big breath and turned a heated stare on me. Her bottom lip began to wobble. “Please go. I’m not drunk anymore, but I still might cry about this.”
Her loan shark wasn’t coming for her, yet. But when he did, he wasn’t going to like what he found. Twice, he’d gotten to her. He’d left bruises on her body. Never again. He was either going to go away peacefully, or he was going to wish he’d never set eyes on Kerrigan Tran. I’d make sure of that.
As I let Kerrigan lead the way, my heart pounded painfully in my chest. She was too quiet. I was terrified of what she was thinking. I knew she was mad and she’d been scared, but I had passed the point of no return. I could no longer live without her.
