Stand back, you flirtatious fiend, or I shall scourge you with scientific minutia and logical deductions.
I have long considered a man’s scent to be inversely proportional to his moral character.”
Be still her heart. A biology-educated rake. The man was truly a menace to bluestockings everywhere.
He clasped her cheek with his palm, a palm that trembled, as if this kiss were just as momentous to him as it was to her.
Mayhap the Duke of Kendall, in a fit of imperious pique, had forbidden Lord Rafe from ever seeing Sophie again, banishing him from the country— Sophie rolled her eyes at the last thought. How gothically melodramatic.
Rafe rolled his shoulders, his mind cataloging all the men in London who might have issue with his existence. Blast. It was a long list.
As he abhorred duels, Rafe excelled at giving heartfelt apologies.
As wealthy men tended to do, the duke had aged gracefully.
Lord Rafe wore his status with flair and verve, whereas she wore hers with last-year’s bonnet fashions and eccentric conversation.
No more manly men of any sort. They are bad, bad, bad for your health.
She was blaming the kilt for distracting her. A man’s bare knees had a way of upending even the soundest woman’s good sense.
“Did ye just call my kilt a skirt?”
“for someone who is supposedly so knowledgeable about women and raking, you make a muck of it with alarming frequency.”
I believe you . . . but I do not trust you.”
“I am concerned for your own soul, Rafe. I sense so much rage in you. I’m not saying you need to like Kendall or trust him or even release your anger over his cruelty. But the hate? The rage you feel toward your father specifically? It will destroy you. Perhaps you could ask yourself: ‘Is there some pain or fear that my hate is protecting me from?’ ”
How had she not seen this joyous ruckus as love? How had she not felt the energy and affection within her own family? How necessary they were to one another? They were not perfect, but they were dedicated and loyal. Case in point, her entire family had insisted she recount every last detail of her adventurous journey to Scotland, gasping and ahhing at all the right places.
