In statistical analysis, we deal with this problem by investigating small samples of a larger group and using that information to make broader inferences. If we want to know how many eggs are laid by nesting bluebirds, we don’t have to look in every bluebird nest in the country. We can look at a few dozen nests and make a pretty good estimate from what we find.
