The South Carolina woman was charged with a crime and had her child taken from her. And those differences had everything to do with race and class: The South Carolina mother is Black, and her child was at the park while she worked at McDonald’s. The professor is white, and, well, a professor. Everyone ostensibly has the right to figure out how to parent, so long as it doesn’t directly endanger the child.
