“That’s Edward. He’s gorgeous, of course, but don’t waste your time. He doesn’t date. Apparently none of the girls here are good-looking enough for him.” She sniffed, a clear case of sour grapes. I wondered when he’d turned her down. I bit my lip to hide my smile. Then I glanced at him again. His face was turned away, but I thought his cheek appeared lifted, as if he were smiling, too.

“You should see the doctor,” Charlie said, laughing. “It’s a good thing he’s happily married. A lot of the nurses at the hospital have a hard time concentrating on their work with him around.”

“Why did you even bother?” I asked frigidly. He paused, and for a brief moment his stunning face was unexpectedly vulnerable. “I don’t know,” he whispered.

That was the first night I dreamed of Edward Cullen.

IN MY DREAM IT WAS VERY DARK, AND WHAT DIM LIGHT THERE was seemed to be radiating from Edward’s skin. I couldn’t see his face, just his back as he walked away from me, leaving me in the blackness. No matter how fast I ran, I couldn’t catch up to him; no matter how loud I called, he never turned.

Oh. This wasn’t the kind of dream I was expecting.

I couldn’t believe the rush of emotion pulsing through me—just because he’d happened to look at me for the first time in a half-dozen weeks.

“Oh, I know—I just wanted to ask you something while we’re trapped here.” He grinned. This could not be happening. “Will you ask me to the spring dance?” he continued.

He grinned. “Well, we can try, I suppose. But I’m warning you now that I’m not a good friend for you.” Behind his smile, the warning was real. “You say that a lot,” I noted, trying to ignore the sudden trembling in my stomach and keep my voice even. “Yes, because you’re not listening to me. I’m still waiting for you to believe it. If you’re smart, you’ll avoid me.” “I think you’ve made your opinion on the subject of my intellect clear, too.” My eyes narrowed.

See one would take this as a red flag but not Bella.

“Aren’t you hungry?” he asked, distracted. “No.” I didn’t feel like mentioning that my stomach was already full—of butterflies.

“You are the most important thing to me now. The most important thing to me ever.” My head was spinning at the rapid change in direction our conversation had taken. From the cheerful topic of my impending demise, we were suddenly declaring ourselves.

“And so the lion fell in love with the lamb…,” he murmured. I looked away, hiding my eyes as I thrilled to the word. “What a stupid lamb,” I sighed. “What a sick, masochistic lion.”

“Drunk?” I objected. “You’re intoxicated by my very presence.” He was grinning that playful smirk again. “I can’t argue with that,” I sighed.
