I want this to happen, because I want you to be safe. And yet, I want to be with you. The two desires are impossible to reconcile.…”
“What I meant to say was, don’t do what you’re doing.”
“In a good way, or in a bad way?” I asked cautiously. He sighed. “Both, always both.”
frustration at my weakness, my slowness, my unruly human reactions.…
“I love you,” he said. “It’s a poor excuse for what I’m doing, but it’s still true.”
“Yes, my first and only baby. He died just a few days after he was born, the poor tiny thing,” she sighed. “It broke my heart—that’s why I jumped off the cliff, you know,” she added matter-of-factly.
“He’s been the odd man out for far too long; it’s hurt me to see him alone.”
“I will always love you, no matter what happens now.”
“It’s been almost a century that Edward’s been alone. Now he’s found you. You can’t see the changes that we see, we who have been with him for so long. Do you think any of us want to look into his eyes for the next hundred years if he loses you?”

As long as the heart keeps beating, the poison spreads, healing, changing the body as it moves through it. Eventually the heart stops, and the conversion is finished. But all that time, every minute of it, a victim would be wishing for death.”

“I love you,” he answered. “I know,” I breathed, so tired.
Death shouldn’t be this uncomfortable.
“Oh, a sadistic vampire, intent on torturing her to death, sure, no problem, she runs off to meet him. An IV, on the other hand…”
“I don’t seem to be strong enough to stay away from you, so I suppose that you’ll get your way… whether it kills you or not,”
“It’s possible to take bravery to the point where it becomes insanity.”
I refuse to damn you to an eternity of night and that’s the end of it.”
“Alice already saw it, didn’t she?” I guessed. “That’s why the things she says upset you. She knows I’m going to be like you… someday.” “She’s wrong. She also saw you dead, but that didn’t happen, either.”
“I told you I’m not going anywhere. Don’t be afraid. As long as it makes you happy, I’ll be here.” I smiled back, ignoring the ache in my cheeks. “You’re talking about forever, you know.” “Oh, you’ll get over it—it’s just a crush.”
