The failure to develop any of the new characters was a very large source of contention for many in the consumer base. The introduction of some truly promising new characters, only to have them left terribly neglected as fans were faced with an appalling handling of legendary and iconic characters and original cast members. This approach to such a powerful and long-term mythology was truly traumatic for the community at large. It created a schism among entire groups of fans.
