She told Congress, “In the department’s first one hundred years, we filled a wall with the names of fallen firefighters. On the eleventh of September, we filled a new wall.” She would never say that she was a hero, because she’s very humble and because she knows how much firefighters risk every day doing their jobs. But she’s been a real, lasting hero for a long time. She protected and improved the lives of thousands of firefighters.
