Visual Chatbot learned to answer “I can’t tell; it’s in black and white,” even if the picture was very obviously not in black and white. It will answer “I can’t tell; I can’t see her feet” to questions like “What color is her hat?” It gives plausible excuses for confusion but in completely the wrong context. One thing it doesn’t usually do, however, is express general confusion—because the humans it learned from weren’t confused.
