we want. It will still try to do what we want. But there will always be a potential disconnect between what we want AI to do and what we tell it to do. Will it get smart enough to understand us and our world as another human does—or even to surpass us? Probably not in our lifetimes. For the foreseeable future, the danger will not be that AI is too smart but that it’s not smart enough. On the surface, AI will seem to understand more.
