His teachers and friends, card-carrying party members all, were innocent. Agung’s father in Bali was innocent. Sumiyati and the other members of her Gerwani chapter, innocent. Sakono’s childhood friends and Magdalena’s union comrades didn’t deserve to be killed. They didn’t even deserve a small fine. They didn’t do anything wrong at all.
