The energies that formerly might have been devoted to revolutionary agitation were now absorbed by what Jones dubs “a culture of consolation” that provided workers with a packet of compensations for social and political impotence: trade unionism, which accepted industrial workplace discipline, and the new urban mass culture of commodified entertainment and distraction.
