Winstanley fashioned a daring and compelling theology of communism. In an extraordinary four-year burst of writing (1648 to 1652), Winstanley published pamphlets and treatises that fused theology, metaphysics, history, and politics. Convinced, as he proclaimed in The True Levellers Standard Advanced (1649), that “the great Creator Reason made the Earth to be a Common Treasury,” Winstanley narrated a story of original fraternity, descent into private property, and redemption back into communism.
