Rick “CJ” Sturckow had been in the chase plane following the spaceship. He had the best view of SpaceShipTwo’s breakup, but couldn’t be certain what had happened. He told us that one pilot’s parachute had definitely opened—later we learned it was Pete Siebold’s—and he had followed it down, praying the pilot was alive.
