As late as 1975, the Los Angeles Times could still report on economic competition from immigrants, headlining a story “Employers Prefer Workers Who Can Be Exploited, Paid Minuscule Wages, US Officials Say.” That year, 47 percent of news stories about immigration mentioned its dampening effect on wages.
