The world is made up of stories. If it wasn’t, life would be insufferable.
Sometimes kindness can bring about more harm than the most malevolent acts.
As a rule, whenever people start something new, they’re incapable of thinking straight. Everything starts with an amorphous cloud of dust and gas, nothing more.
When we laugh, it helps us pull ourselves together, like how the wind carries something from one place to another. Laughter is the wind of the mind and soul—it picks you up and whisks you far away.
Why are people born into the world? That’s easy. So they’ll have a story to tell. Some of us die before the story ends, some of us die long after the story has ended, and some of us die right at the very start.
life is but a series of repetitions.
Writing is like looking in a mirror, but the face we see there isn’t our own.
If something drives you from yourself, cast it from your life. Even renounce the world if that is what you must do.
Nature knows how things should be done—it’s people who spoil the game.
When our night drifts off to sleep, the sounds of the other night awaken.
We always have the strength to deal with whatever comes up in our lives.
Love enslaves others or it is a slave itself.
Humans were the frailest of all, but strangely, it was they who brought the most harm to nature.
When we remember, we reinvigorate life.
Forgetting doesn’t alleviate the pain we feel—remembering does.
“Some things settle into our thoughts and feelings because that is the very place they need to be. That’s why you can’t get rid of them. They exist to be remembered, as they are the bedrock of our stories and that which we call life.”
The mind is the outer space we carry within. Nothing ever gets lost there.
What a deplorable state of affairs: Human lives can be cut short so easily, while the things they bring into the world survive.
“You don’t have to be leading a crowd of protesters to be a hero. When there’s a bloodbath going on in your country, the greatest form of heroism and rebellion is to sit down at your desk every morning and write.”
Everything that comes from the heart has an innate value that is both literary and long-lasting.
True death occurs when the spirit dies, regardless of whether or not the ephemeral body goes on living.
Most of the time, there’s a real image that mirrors don’t reveal.
Freedom and love are two of the most likely yet most improbable things in the world. They have the greatest chances of being realized, but they are experienced the least. While they are the most difficult things to experience, what could be easier than obtaining either of them?
life isn’t what we experience. It’s how we remember it.”
When a heart opens up before you like a book, bursting into leaf as if it were a tree, you can stumble upon all humanity’s emotions there, in its every nook and cranny.
What is your substance, whereof are you made, That millions of strange shadows on you tend? Since every one hath, every one, one shade, And you, but one, can every shadow lend.
“Water carries hatred to the mill of being deeply loved.”
Secrets are bombs that slam into our homes.
“Life exists so that it can be lived, not explained. Otherwise, it’s not life at all.”
