Since I’d left Blue with Darius, the lasting imprint of her ashen cheeks and wide eyes were burned into my retinas. She’d fought at my side tonight with the fierceness of a warrior. And she’d saved my fucking life.
My Atlas pinged and I took it out of my bag, my gut fraying as I found a private message waiting for me from Orion. Lance: What if I don't want it to stop?
Before I answered, Seth broke into song, cracking out the Backstreet Boys classic, I Want It That Way. Caleb picked up the next line on cue and Seth started clicking his fingers to the beat. They both started dancing, sashaying their way toward us and I stared on in surprise. Seth looked to Caleb and they both belted out the last line of the chorus together with their hands on their hearts.
I guess you’re about to go back to radio silence so for what it’s worth… In Solaria blue means royal. And to me, blue means you.
Darius slid his hand from my thigh, running it up my side over the fabric of the t-shirt until he found my hair where he began twisting it through his fingers.
“And what would your girlfriend think?” I gave him a stern expression, my gut knotting tightly as I waited for his response to that. “What girlfriend?” he asked lightly. “Francesca,” I said, trying to step away from him but he held on tight. He grinned wickedly. “You're jealous.”
“If you don't kiss me I'll go mad,” his voice rumbled through his chest and a magnetic heat tugged me toward him. It was my call. Kiss him and bring the world down on our heads, or let go, walk away and never look back.
“Remind me,” Caleb challenged, stepping a little closer. At that moment, Darius appeared. He strolled straight towards us and heat rose in my cheeks as his gaze landed on me. I felt ridiculously awkward around him after last night and I had zero intention of talking to him now.
Fae hair dye was incredible. My hair shimmered like stars when it caught the light and was as deep blue as a twilight sky. I'd coloured it all over, every last hair. And as I ran my fingertips through my soft locks, my heart began to beat harder again. Blue means you like me.
Seeing another guy's hands on you makes me want to rip out their eyes so they never get to look at you again.
Instead of giving me more of his mouth on mine, he painted a line of kisses up to my ear. He pushed his fingers into my hair, his touch like a drug bleeding into my veins and I shut my eyes to savour the high.
“I'm gonna lose my mind over you,” he gasped,
“I hope you meant the part about screwing me senseless.” Darius stood leaning against his doorframe at the end of the hall and I mentally shrugged off the altercation with Marguerite as I stalked towards him. I rolled my eyes at him. “In your dreams.” “Every night,” he agreed and his tone was serious enough that it brought a blush to my cheeks.
“If you’re a Dragon maybe you can marry Darius and save him from Mildred,” Xavier suggested casually. I half choked on my coke and set it down quickly as I coughed. “Fuck no,” I said once I could speak. “Mildred is welcome to him. I want a front row seat to their wedding so that I can laugh my ass off but that’s the only reason I’ll be attending.”
“Stay,” he replied instantly.
“I have a perfectly good bed downstairs,” I replied, shaking my head just a little. “Why would you want me to stay?” Darius frowned like he wasn’t sure what to say to that but he inched a little closer all the same. “Because it feels right,” he breathed.
But the truth was, I feared that if she left, she might not come back. And even if she wanted to, who knew how long it would be until we got an opportunity to be together again?
I released her and she was gone, darting into the darkness and making my soul feel like it was being ripped in two. I loved Darius, but by the stars, did he have to come to me tonight of all nights?

Darius was looking down at me, his eyes wild with panic as he brushed my hair away from my face.

“You burned my clothes off of my body on my first day here. You encouraged every asshole in this school to make my life hell. You tortured and tormented me every second you got the chance and you laughed while you did it. You took my deepest fear and dragged me to that pool so that you could force me to relive it and you almost fucking killed me,” I hissed, all the venom of all the hatred I’d ever felt for him pouring out of me like it was an open wound. “So yes. “For a moment there I felt like I was looking at Lionel instead of a man who swore never to be like him.”
“You wanna stay and watch Rambo with me?” he offered with a shy grin which was so unlike his usual cocky smirk that I couldn’t help but stare at it a little. “Yeah,” I replied, moving to lean against his pillows as his smile widened. “That actually sounds really... nice.”
My gaze narrowed on the huge mound of earth which contained Terra House. She was in there now with Caleb. I knew it. And the anger it lit in me wasn’t something I could put out easily.
My stomach was a knot of constantly warring instincts. I wanted to crush her and hold her at the same time. Every strike I made at her almost seemed to cut me more than her.
Diego caught my arm and led me away, not even noticing Orion there. Because to him it meant nothing. It wasn’t the sky falling down, but to me it felt like every star in the heavens were descending and crashing into the earth around me.
“I’m trying to get Diego Polaris’s saliva off of my girl,” he growled.
“I just want someone to make my heart beat faster,” she said in a low voice that had me drawing closer to her as I looked into her dark eyes. “To challenge me and make me laugh and push back against my bullshit. I want to be forced out of my comfort zone and I want to feel excited, exhilarated, afraid. But not just because you’re an asshole. Because I want to feel alive.”
Darcy: I also can’t believe you just admitted you want me to pass The Reckoning. Lance: It’s complicated.

“Sir!” a male voice drew my attention back to the house and a fireman came marching out of the wreckage with a bundle of blankets in his arms. “The twins survived! I pulled them out of the ashes.” My heart pounded harder and harder as I finally understood why we hadn’t died this night. We were impervious to fire. Impossible as it seemed, it was clear as day now.
“Anything.” The darkness drew back like a tide and the night sky shone down on me once again. A glittering number twenty shone above my head and I blinked heavily as I shook off the oppressive feel of the darkness which had claimed me. I turned to Tory beside me, her eyes wide as she gazed up at the blazing number twenty above her head too. All around us, more and more numbers appeared above the students circling the field, but none as high as ours.
Darius: I’m sure you’ll look good enough in anything you wear. Just turn up as you are.
“Shit, you’d better keep me away from him tonight if one glimpse of the moon is all it takes for me to start sending him half naked photos,” I joked, but I kinda meant it. And I kinda hoped she didn’t and I ran into him anyway. Shit.
“I think I preferred the other option,” he said, moving a little closer to me.
She looked...I didn’t even know what to make of her dressed up like a freaking prom queen but I liked it. I wanted to pull the flowers out of her hair and get her white dress filthy in the mud. Her gaze found mine and she bit her bottom lip in a way that made me hard just looking at her.
If I got near that girl when the moon was up then there would be no stopping me. I’d be begging on my knees for a moment of her time and she’d probably be laughing in my fucking face. I should have asked her why she sent it. Fuck.
She wasn’t just a girl though. Not to me. She was the one girl I shouldn’t want, the one I couldn’t have, the one I didn’t need. And yet I did. And everything in my life could be damaged so badly by that need that I’d fought it tooth and claw up until this point.

“Because that’s what I do,” he said slowly. “I watch you and hunger for you and ache for you. It torments me like I torment you.”
“I’d find it easier to carve my eyes out than I would to stop them landing on you.”
“There are countless people who would say I’m not allowed to want you,” Darius breathed. “But you make me want to burn the whole world down so that I can claim you for my own.” “Then we should burn it down,” I agreed.
