Cortisol is one of the hormones that we produce to help us get out of bed; this is known as the ‘cortisol awakening response’. Unfortunately, this is why, often, when you wake up hungover, or try to have a lie-in at the weekend, you can’t simply fall back to sleep when you want to. The rhythm plays to your advantage to get you out of bed and into work each day, and you can’t simply shut it off as easily as you can your alarm.
