She’s the first thing to give me a purpose in too long to remember, and I keep almost losing her. “When I finish destroying Dorian, you’re going to be my Flame,” I tell her very seriously. She smiles up at me, only a single tear escaping her lids. “Only if you stop pissing me off so much.” I nip her lips with more playfulness, trying to comfort her, as I hold my own emotions at bay.
Just before I can form words, Violet comes rushing toward him, her body clad in a shirt two sizes too big and a pair of sweatpants. “Damien, you can’t do this,” she tells him on a choked sound. “You need to feed more. I can’t let you—”
“But as firstborn Morpheous, Damien inherited the strongest mind. He was groomed for that role. We’re ignorant fools for never considering it before now,”
I’d put Dorian down a hundred more times to have her like this. My mind continues to slip into the fog, as I revel in the feel of having her. My Violet. My Flame. Once I have her firmly lying underneath me, I pin her down, enjoying how very tempting she looks when she’s vulnerable like this. It sings to the predator in me, because I want to possess every inch of her. “You’re the only good thing to happen to me in too long to remember,” I murmur as I settle my weight on her more.
Maybe this is why I love their monsters so much. I think their monsters loved me before they did.
“You’d better be glad I love the two of you.
My eyes drift to her wrist, where the extremely oversized Flame mark is. Usually it’s just a dull red mark on the inner wrist. Damien’s stretches across her wrist like blood-red, poorly sharpened bracelet. That alone is surprising, since I’ve never seen one that size. What surprises me more than that is there’s another one that is just as large on her other wrist. There’s only ever one mark. He’s claimed her so deeply that he’s left two impossibly large ones.
“I couldn’t decide on a ring for you, so I retrieved one from my family’s vault. This one has the most interesting story attached to it that you’ll appreciate, and it’s the most attractive, so I can appreciate it. See? I can compromise.”
I don’t confess it aloud, but I half hope she finds yet another way to prove we’ve all underestimated her once again. Even if it is impossible.
I shake my head from the distraction, moving my eyes back to Vance, as he goes to step in front of Emit, clearly taking a stand against Idun. These are dead wolves, meaning this was Emit’s problem that clearly got out of hand. His eyes are so defeated, and his jaw wobbles with fury and heartbreak. He hates killing his wolves. Thousands are dead all around him.
Before the image can blur too much, I watch his attention turn toward my direction, and either by accident or coincidence, our gazes meet and hold. His pupils dilate, and I’m half certain he sees me.
The only thing I truly feared was loving them and losing them to you,”
“Idun’s the perfect storm. The first-born was dead before the night of the sacrifice, leaving her to bear first-born obligations as the appointed head of the family’s future. That’s the reason there are two types of monsters under one name,”
They tried to help her without making it obvious, in an effort to keep Idun from punishing the poor monster that much more.
“You played a part in front of the betas and omegas, creating conflict and war to keep the numbers under control, because it got complicated really fast. It damn near spiraled out of control when the bad bloodlines popped up.”
The omegas warmed your cold hearts by wiggling their ways in, starting with you.”
“You didn’t give up on being an alpha. It hurt you the worst when she tricked you into loving her again. You really did try to get over her, but you’re a lover. You’ve always wanted someone to love.
She runs her hand up my chest, and my breath shakes out of me, because the woman’s touch is just too soft, familiar, and unsettlingly tempting.
She steps back, and I almost feel abandonment in the absence of her touch. My chest constricts tighter, and I strain to move toward her. But my feet remain rooted to their spot, despite my best efforts.
So daring, young, and innocent, it seems. And ambitious, if she’s willing to do this right under Idun’s nose. I’ll name a ship after this one.
Vance’s attention returns to me, heavily resting on my face. This is new. This look. This intensity.
I’m idly stewing in a pile of jealousy, because my curse was broken too. On the same night. And Vance gets her to himself before I even have my chance to celebrate. We’ve all gone mad.
“Something’s changed since the day of Dorian’s attack,” Damien says quietly, his eyes on her. “She’s changed since then. More so from the moment I delivered his punishment.”
Family. Our family. The five of us.
“I have my own, but I’ve heard rumors he was turning wolf and not staying with the knights,” Vance grinds out, casting an accusatory glare toward Emit.
It takes a moment to really believe what I see. I’m standing in the middle of a bouquet of dismembered body parts. As I stare around in confusion at all the carnage, Damien drops to my side, his breath snaking out. “His sister is just a succubus, right?” I ask, definitely smelling some strong, old shifter bloodlines. The scent of those bloodlines makes them undeniably Idun’s crop.
“Are you fucking serious right now? There’s a small pack of dead shifters, and our girlfriend is going to once again press Idun’s buttons. All while failing to mention any of this to us,” he gripes. Smiling too broadly, I hold my phone up to show him the pencil holder. “Isn’t it perfect?” His eyes cut to me and narrow.
I forgot to tell her she’s the only outsider I’ve ever allowed in.
“Because now I know who you are. You’re not Anna, the friendly neighborhood ghost. And when the guys find out who you are, I’m not sure they’re going to be happy about it. You should have been honest with me from the beginning.”
The sound of leaves crunching has me looking up to find Tiara and Leiza moving toward me, both of them whimpering as though they’re informing me Fay isn’t among the dead they’ll see tonight. My throat feels tight. My chest feels heavy. Something terrible pops into my head, and the thought won’t go away. “Dig up her grave,” I tell them.
A groan comes from the woman, who is certainly not Fay. Just as I feared… Idun.
Anyway, turns out that Margie left just when the town started getting fun. Violet raising the Simpletons actually interrupted whatever plan Idun was initially working on. This tells us a lot.”
“One might even accuse me, Damien Morpheous, of being happy,” he carries on, backing me up and caging me in against the wall. “It’s a foreign feeling, so distant a memory that I’ve forgotten. But I’m ninety-nine percent positive this is indeed happiness.”
“I was going to tell him yes when he asked, while wearing the ring Vance gave me, so that I could answer them both at the same time. I didn’t want there to be a last place,”
“Oh, so you know Idun was your favorite housekeeper?”
