The National Memorial for Peace and Justice stands as a stark witness to the more than 4,400 African Americans who were lynched between 1877 and 1950. Notably, it is within sight of the Alabama Statehouse, where Jefferson Davis took the oath of office as president of the Confederate States of America, with Reverend Basil Manly Sr. at his side, in 1861.
The ex-governor must have instinctively understood that white Christianity, as it was believed and practiced by his fellow townspeople, was perfectly compatible with the mob lynching of a black man.
