‘We’ll not regret it. It’ll be fun.’ ‘Riding donkeys and eating toffee apples is fun,’ I said. ‘Yes, but that will make us fat and lazy. This is the sort of fun which gives life an edge.’
‘He also warned us that you might not take things quite as seriously as they warrant,’ he said. ‘My big brother has always had the measure of me,’ she said. ‘But I tend to view it entirely round the other way – I rather think that everyone else takes things much more seriously than they warrant.’
If we were to pop our clogs now, the things in our rooms would leave quite a puzzle for people to solve. But they’d not tell even a tiny fraction of the story, would they?’
‘To tell the truth I’m rather looking forward to silver hair, wrinkles, and the opportunity to be unpardonably rude. We allow our elders much more leeway in that regard, don’t you think? I shall cultivate an air of curmudgeonly cantankerousness and insult my way through society. You shall follow in my wake, apologizing. “I’m so sorry,” you’ll say. “She doesn’t mean any offence, she’s just getting on a bit – you know how they can be at that age.” We’ll have such larks.’
‘He has a point, my lady,’ I said. ‘I’ve said the same thing to you myself more than once. I think we just need to resign ourselves to the fact that you’re going to be shot soon.’ ‘Well, when you put it like that, dear, I suppose you’re right. It’s such a shame that it has to be this way, though. If I were going to be murdered I’d have picked a much more impressive murderer. And a much more glamorous location. Going out at the hands of a talentless former-assassin’s insane brother in a derelict shed isn’t at all what I had in mind.’
‘Really, my lady?’ I said. ‘Now? A lecture on fluid dynamics in the middle of a gunfight?’ ‘There’s never a wrong time to learn new things,’ she said. ‘But you make a good point.
