Like the static in the air that comes with a thunderstorm. “A secret for a secret?” “Exactly.”
Such a pretty boy. So nicely dressed, so polite. So very, very respectful. But good God, get that man’s clothes off and get him into a bed, and it’s a whole different story. One I’d like to write a few more chapters in, or maybe an entire novel—a long one. I took the Boy Scout out of the polo and unleashed a very dirty man.
Kind of like the way addicts always say “Just one more hit,” I think Ryan Kingston could be my drug of choice.
He glances at my nameplate poised on the corner of my desk. “Queenie, is it?” “That’s right.” “Beautiful name for a beautiful woman.” “All right, well, thanks so much. I can take it from here,” Kingston says loudly and then drops a huge box on my desk, very close to the delivery guy’s pinkie.
“I’ve made plenty of bad decisions while under the influence; unlike you, I don’t seem to learn from them.” “But you said you don’t usually go home with random strangers.” “Oh, I don’t. That was a first for me. And just so we’re clear, you were actually one of the best bad decisions I’ve ever had the misfortune of making.” Queenie winks.
“Are we going to the SPCA to pet cute puppies that need a home?” “No, but I could arrange that if it’s something you’d want to do. I actually had an endorsement for the SPCA last year, and I try to go once a month to their adoption days: sign autographs and that kind of thing.” “Why are you so perfect?” It makes it hard to stick to the whole “we can just be friends” rule when he tells me things like this.
“King and Queenie? That’s epic.”

“Ax throwing?” “It’s fun.” I take his face between my palms and turn his head from side to side. “Who are you, and what have you done with my Boy Scout?”
“Keep your arms straight and bend at the elbow.” I follow his instructions as he makes minute adjustments to my stance, shifting my hips so I’m facing the target straight on. “That’s it, good girl. Bend your knees a little.”

If I were less invested, I would take the out, but I want this woman and all the issues that potentially come with getting involved with the GM’s daughter.
“I wish you could see yourself through my eyes, Queenie. Then you might have some idea as to how incredible you really are.”
“It’s okay if you want to lose control with me, King. I definitely want to lose control with you.”
“Lock the Boy Scout in the closet and let yourself off your leash, King.”
“Make me yours.” She drags her fingertips down my cheek. “It’s all I want, just to be yours.”
I’m falling in love with her chaos.
“Hey, Lavender!” She ducks behind her mother’s legs. “You remember Queenie, don’t you, Lavender?” She looks up at her mother and gives her a serious nod. Then she turns that beautiful blue gaze back on me, and a huge smile lights up her face. She lifts her hand in a wave. “Hi, Keenie.”
Keenie 🥺🥺 My heart
She reaches for Lavender’s hand, but she’s no longer standing beside her. Instead she’s next to me. She tugs on my sleeve and holds out a piece of artwork. “Did you draw this?” She nods. “For you,” she whispers. “You drew this for me?” I take it from her when she nods.
I show her without words that she’s worth whatever trouble she seems to think she’s going to bring my way. I’d rather have her chaos than stay stuck in the calm, where everything is lackluster.
“You’re anything but mediocre, Queenie. You’re magnificent, and whoever told you that you’re not talented is malicious and jealous.”
“I see you, Queenie. Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re not worthy.”
The thing about happiness is that it isn’t meant to last. Life is a roller coaster: slow climbs to the top, a brief balance in euphoria, and then a steep drop that leaves you screaming and gasping for breath.
“I can handle the media going squirrelly and all the ridiculous crap that Corey’s fiancée said on that crack-pipe show, but I think Queenie is going to have a hard time with it, and from what I’ve seen, her response to problems is to run away from them.” “So be someone safe for her that she can run to.”
What I want is to wrap her up and protect her from Corey and the hell this is probably wreaking on her.
“You can push me away as much as you want, but it’s not going to stop me from wanting you. I love you because of all these perceived flaws you have, not in spite of them. I know you’ve been let down a lot, and I don’t plan to be one of those people in your life. Give us a chance to get through this together, Queenie. Let me catch you when you fall. Let me be your safe place to land.”
I want all your dark secrets to be mine to keep. I want all your pieces, all the things that make you who you are. I don’t care if you think you’re bent or broken; let me love all of you.”
“I love King. I’d brave just about anything for him.”
“Yes. It’s a yes. I’ll bring my chaos into your calm.” I place a soft kiss on her lips. “There’s no place I’d rather be than the eye of your storm.”
He’s the calm to my storm. My still lake at dawn. My king.
