So nicely dressed, so polite. So very, very respectful.
He grins again, and my brain shorts out for a second.
He turns to Lavender and gives her a smile that nearly liquefies my panties. “Did you drop something important, Miss Lavender?” She nods and then buries her face in her dad’s neck,
“Who are you, and what have you done with my Boy Scout?”
“I wish you could see yourself through my eyes, Queenie. Then you might have some idea as to how incredible you really are.”
“There’s a reason I can’t stay away from you, even if it would be easier for both of us.” I dip down and press my lips to hers.
“But I don’t get to kiss you good night. Or sleep next to you. I don’t want you to be a secret I have to keep.”
“You may need to set some parameters for me, my queen, so I know how out of control I’m allowed to get here.” I shiver in anticipation at his low warning tone and this new endearment. “No parameters.”
“You really are perfect for me, you know that?”
“Make me yours.” She drags her fingertips down my cheek. “It’s all I want, just to be yours.”
“Queenie happens to be my girlfriend, so the fact that you’re putting your hands on her and using your size to physically intimidate her makes this one hundred percent my fucking business.”
“First of all, Queenie is not some chick. She is my goddamn girlfriend, and if you talk to her or about her like that again I will not hesitate to put you in your place.
So instead I treat her exactly as she deserves to be: like she’s my queen.
sing along. I can carry a tune most of the time, and it’s a catchy song. What I don’t expect at all, and apparently neither does Kingston, is for Lavender to start singing too.
“You should be proud of yourself, Queenie. I know I am.
“I see you, Queenie. Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re not worthy.”
I love you, Queenie. I want you to meet my family so they can fall in love with you too.”
“Baby, I want you to listen to me and really hear me, okay?” “Okay. I’ll try,” she whispers brokenly. “I love you.”
“You can push me away as much as you want, but it’s not going to stop me from wanting you. I love you because of all these perceived flaws you have, not in spite of them. I know you’ve been let down a lot, and I don’t plan to be one of those people in your life. Give us a chance to get through this together, Queenie. Let me catch you when you fall. Let me be your safe place to land.”
I want all your dark secrets to be mine to keep. I want all your pieces, all the things that make you who you are. I don’t care if you think you’re bent or broken; let me love all of you.”
hold her against me, cupping the back of her head, and drop my mouth so it’s at her ear. “What’s wrong; what happened? How can I fix it?” “You’ve already fixed it: you’re here.”
“I love King. I’d brave just about anything for him.”
I want to know you’re sleeping in my bed, our bed, even when I’m not there.”
“Yes. It’s a yes. I’ll bring my chaos into your calm.” I place a soft kiss on her lips. “There’s no place I’d rather be than the eye of your storm.”
Kingston and I got married the summer after I graduated.
He was mine and I was his, and he wanted it to be official. He wanted to see me walk down the aisle in a gorgeous dress and recite our vows in front of our friends and his crazy, wild family. And so we did. Then we spent a month traveling, just the two of us.
Kingston’s huge body fills the doorway of my studio. “How’s my beautiful wife?”
And Kingston is exactly the kind of father I expected him to be: all in, devoted, present, and fully invested.
I’m not afraid of failing anymore, because no matter what, I have the most amazing man at my side. He’s always there to catch me when I fall and to celebrate every success,
He’s the calm to my storm. My still lake at dawn. My king.
