Evolve or die. If I’d been unwilling—or unable—to evolve as an individual, I’d be dead or in jail right now.
What you cannot do is become complacent with any of those fears. If you fear loss, you can’t spend your life avoiding intimacy and love (something I’ve struggled with). If you fear failure, you can’t stop taking risks. If you fear the unknown, you can’t stop trying new experiences. “It is not death that a man should fear,” said the Roman emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius, “but he should fear never beginning to live.”
You need to bend fear into moments of action at every opportunity, because the fearless not only recognize but also often reward one of their own.
“The valiant never taste of death but once.”
Like Malcolm X said, “To me, the thing that is worse than death is betrayal. You see, I could conceive death, but I could not conceive betrayal.”
Gianni Versace once said, “It is nice to have valid competition; it pushes you to do better.” I agree with that. The problem is when you’re engaged with inconsequential competition. There are no wins for the more established party in that sort of battle.
