When people were around a man like Lim, it was like they could smell blood in the water and prayed it wasn’t theirs. The stiffness they felt—the tingle on their neck—that was by design. That was biology telling them, There is the potential here for violence.

I love this paragraph and that last line. There's not a word wasted and it is very powerful.
