The advantage of talking in terms of “expertise” rather than “science” is that this circle need not be composed only of scientists, and that we need not be overly attached to certain credentials, proper names and lines of demarcation. If certain laypersons possess relevant “experience-based expertise,” say Collins and Evans, then by all means they should have the public's ear.
