He proved neither illuminating nor particularly adept at the time-honored format, although he seemed occasionally to enjoy the give-and-take with journalists, especially in his early years as president. Attempting to explain why both Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan had averaged so few press conferences, William Safire offered, “Reagan because he hated the preparation, Nixon because he hated the press.”
