Nixon’s secret “Enemies List,” exposed amid the avalanche of Watergate revelations in June 1973, cemented the administration’s reputation for harboring resentment and plotting vengeance. The McCarthy-era blacklist was long dead and discredited, so when Nixon’s roster of targets was revealed to the public, it transformed a number of its previously anonymous designees into heroes.
