By far the biggest disgrace of the Reagan era was the Iran-Contra affair, which came to light in late 1986. After imposing a trade embargo on Iran and urging America’s allies to do likewise with terrorist nations, Reagan authorized the secret sale of arms to Iran for that rogue state’s use in its war against Iraq.
