Unlike his predecessors, Reagan seldom kept up with the newspapers. He “glances” at the papers that arrived in his office each morning—the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and the relatively new and decidedly conservative Washington Times—Speakes noted during his White House tenure. When Reagan did open a paper, Speakes revealed without embarassment, his “habit is to read the comics first.”
