“Nixon,” she continued, “. . . tried to make the American public believe that reporters were out to get him and that he was the underdog. Many people believed him, too; even after the [secret White House] tapes were discovered, the press was still being blamed for running Nixon out of office.” To his final day in the White House, she believed, Nixon “whipped up so much public opinion against the press that I would not have been surprised to have seen a reporter tarred and feathered by Nixon supporters.”
