Whether Trump was deploying tweets or generating free airtime for his rallies, no one else had ever used the media to dispatch so many opponents so effectively. But the most significant and permanent victim of Trump bashing was the press itself. Trump persuaded nearly half the voting population in 2016 that the mainstream media could not be trusted and that therefore criticism of him must raise doubts—even when he erred egregiously or crossed the line of civil discourse.
