Personal-assistant work was respected in Berkeley, and it wasn’t difficult to find people. It was a strange and amazing feeling to be able to interview and hire people whose explicit job was to help me in the specific ways and at the specific times I needed it. I hired someone to come in the morning and the evening, and then I had someone to act as backup if my regular person didn’t show up on a Friday or Saturday night.
