Perhaps if he couldn’t lay beneath the stars with her, he could watch over her from among them. The light gave way to darkness.
The passion I feel with him is unparalleled, like twin flames coming together to form a single wildfire that will wipe out everything in its path. Destructive elements made for each other.
“You are my heaven and hell, woman.” His deep and husky voice is a sound I’ll never become immune to, one that will always stir my excitement the way it does now.
Tears slip down my cheeks, and he captures one beneath the pad of his thumb, smears it across my lips. “You taste that? It’s reality, Cali, and it’s fucking bitter. But you and I? We can lose ourselves. Escape and never come back.” The flicker of a smile dances across his face. “I’m telling you, it’s the best feeling in the world. Escaping it all.”
This is how he brings me back from the dark depths without blinding me to the light. This is how he steals away my pain and makes it his own.
“You were the only light for me. They stole that away, too, and threw me into blackness. Things I can’t stop seeing, whether my eyes are opened, or closed.”
“Smoking kills, you know,” I say with a smile in my voice. “Yeah, well, so does love.”
“The fate of women these days always seems to rest in the hands of men, whether we wish it that way, or not.”
I recall the night I lay beneath the stars with Valdys, and he told me the light we see is the sun’s reflection on its surface. How strange, the way it mirrors my thoughts about him now. How the warmth of my memories has been like the sun on my face in this pitch black world.
“I love you beyond love.”
In a world of monsters, love makes us human.
He’s still the scarred boy who touched my heart. And I’m the wounded little bird, whose wings he made fly again.
