Today the situation is profoundly altered. While details remain debated, our family tree is more crowded than scholars like Busk or Darwin ever imagined: there are over 20 identified hominin species from just the last 3.5 million years.
Northerly animals do tend to have bigger eyes, and on average, even people from higher latitudes have eyeballs up to 20 per cent bigger than those from near the equator.
