you tell him to fuck off because the patriarchy is bullshit and you don’t have time for that crap. Take it from me. Men can be disgusting, but men in power? Ain’t nobody got time for that.”
I don’t have to justify myself to anyone here. For a little while, I feel like I can breathe.”
But if you worry too much about all the things you could be, you’ll miss out on all the things you actually are.”
I’ve talked a lot about mental health, and how important it is to take care of yourself. You need to get out of bed, even if the very idea hurts. You need to take a shower. You need to eat. You need to get dressed. You need to go outside and get sun on your skin.
But this morning, I opened my eyes and realized I couldn’t let this be who I was. I wouldn’t let this thing beat me. So I pushed myself up. Here is what I look like now. It’s not great, but I’m going to be okay. I have an appointment with my therapist. I’m going to take my SSRIs. I am going to go outside and breathe that sweet, sweet smoggy air. Because I’m worth it. And so are you.
Someone told me once that when one door closes, a window is left open so you can still break in and take what you want.”
He wasn’t an extrovert by nature, but he’d forced himself to become one in order to survive. After all, if he didn’t speak up, his voice would never be heard.
You don’t need sex to be in love with someone.” “But then how else do you show that you’re in love?” Josy looked up at the sky. The stars were bright. “Because you can look at the person and just know they’re someone special. That you would do anything to see them smile. Sex is good for a lot of people, but not for others. And just because they feel that way doesn’t mean they don’t love like everyone else.”
It’s that feeling, right? That feeling of knowing you’re not alone because the person you’re with doesn’t want to be anywhere else but where they are.”
When you stand up for yourself, you never know if you’re standing up for someone who isn’t ready to do the same. And you might be giving them the courage to do it somewhere down the road. And when they do, they help someone else. And it keeps on going down the line.
Sometimes you need to hide away from the rest of the world. And it’s okay to do that, just as long as you don’t forget the world is waiting for you when you’re done.”
It’s not about winning every battle. It’s about how you face the war. It’s okay to have bad days, just as long as you remember to not let the bad days last forever.
“Because no matter what, taking chances is always going to be scary. That won’t ever change. Sometimes you put yourself out there and it doesn’t work out. Maybe because it wasn’t the right time or place or it wasn’t meant to be. But you can always say you tried, and I think that’s what’s important.”
Life stings. It can bite and claw and kick you when you’re down. It can lift you up in celebration and clutch your heart until you think it’ll rip from your chest. It’s glorious and wonderful and oh so devastating. We sing and we laugh and we dance until we can move no more, and it’s all worth it. Every single piece. Every single part. Because life isn’t made up of the breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away.
