Galloway would soon help raise three units in New Bern, the Thirty-Fifth, Thirty-Sixth and Thirty-Seventh Regiments of United States Colored Troops, whose soldiers were among the 180,000 black men, most of them former slaves, who ultimately fought for the Union.
