From that day to the end of the war, the Americans never felt entirely secure at Ulithi. Admiral Sherman recalled, “We felt that we were sitting on a powder keg which might go off at any time. Far from enjoying a rest, we felt we might be safer in the open sea.”76 Even so, fleet recreation at Ulithi was serious business. A new movie was screened on every ship in the fleet, every night.
