The invasion force was organized as the Tenth Army. It was under the overall command of Lieutenant General Simon B. Buckner Jr. of the U.S. Army. Major elements of this force were the army’s XXIV Corps, including three infantry divisions (the 7th, 77th, and 96th) commanded by Major General John R.
