A neat experiment at the University of Queensland in Australia in 2018 showed just how puzzling this all is by demonstrating that at the quantum level, events occur with no definite causal order. Basically, in physics, causality means that if an event A takes place before an event B (in some frame of reference) then A may or may not have influenced or even caused B.
